Could This Be Gwen Stefani’s Favorite Print?

Everyone’s got a signature style. Kanye West has his closet of luxe hoodies, the Duchess of Cambridge has her royally cool slew of sophisticated coat dresses, and Gwen Stefani has her rockstar supply of stripes. In fact, as perhaps a public declaration of her love for them, Stefani has been snapped in her favorite stripes on more than one occasion. The proof? All the times in the past few months where she has, no doubt, wore her stripes on her sleeve.

Skinny Lines

Stefani takes nearly identical pullovers but tweaks how she pairs them. styled the same way, but with completely different pairings. She casually half-tucked a Pam & Gela top ($ 295; pamandgela.com) into paint-splattered boyfriend jeans (right). A few weeks later, she goes back to black and white skinny stripes, pairing them with distressed denim. She swapped out her red cat-eye frames for white ones, and her crazy cut-out heels for strappy ones.

Bold Bands

The platinum blonde bombshell pulled off two distinct looks with the same knit and frames. She first tucked it into a pair of slouchy utilitarian jeans with a camo bomber tied at her waist, complete with maroon booties (right), and then paired the top with belted destroyed boyfriend jeans, a black beanie, and Pharrell Williams’s polka-dot Adidas Stan Smiths the second time around.

Patch-Riddled Stripes

To support Pharrell Williams’s Adidas Originals collection, she stepped out in his designs at two red carpet events, gravitating toward happy patch-riddled stripes both times. Her look? Slightly eccentric, contentedly whimsical, and uniquely Gwen.

Mindy Kaling Wears Her Sunday Best On This Week’s The Mindy Project

Mindy Lahiri may be a lot of things, but a Catholic is not one of them. However, thanks to Danny’s little white lie to his new priest Father Michael O’Donnell, played by the hilarious Stephen Colbert, Mindy has to maintain the ruse on this week’s The Mindy Project.

So like any good faux Catholic couple, they attend mass together. For the scene, costume designer Salvador Perez decided to steer away from the typical conservative church outfit and instead opt for a brightly patterned Dolce & Gabbana dress (below). “At first we were going to dress her demurely for church and then we were like what the hell,” Perez tells InStyle of the look. However, the church theme was still present. “The dress sort of reminded me of a stained glass window, which was perfect for the scene.”

Coming soon to #themindyproject. Father Michael O’Donnell.

Unfortunately Mindy doesn’t make the best impression, so she decides to remedy that by inviting Father O’Donnell over for dinner. In typical Mindy fashion, she decides to text him in lieu of a traditional phone call. For this hilarious emoji-filled exchange, Perez dressed Mindy in a Marni dress (below). “Putting Mindy in cream was really unusual, but she loved that dress,” says Perez. “We wanted the look to feel like spring, but with the long sleeves and fabric it still felt wintry.”

For the dinner scene, Perez went with a Catholic schoolgirl vibe, dressing her in a Diane von Furstenberg sweater and a Karen Millen pleated skirt (above, very top). “We wanted her to look a bit innocent but still hot.” Mission accomplished!

The Explicit Scene You Won’t See in This Is Where I Leave You! Plus More Candid Moments Straight from the Cast

What happens when you put Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Connie Britton, Kathryn Hahn, Jane Fonda, Corey Stoll, and Adam Driver in a house together for a whole straight week? A lot of funny stories, apparently!

When we caught up with the stars of the film This Is Where I Leave You in Toronto at InStyle and Forevermark’s pop-up portrait lounge, they shared some behind the scenes moments with us, and one hot scene that ended up ended up on the cutting room floor. “I had the best time making this movie,” Britton, who plays Tracy, the spicy older girlfriend to Driver’s character, Phillip, told InStyle. “We were shooting at a house in Long Island and we had a bedroom assigned to us to all hang out in between scenes, so we would be together for 12 hours a day in this one room.”

Sounds fitting for a movie that is about a family that is reunited after the death of their father, whose last wish was for his family to sit shiva for one week in their mother’s home. “There was a lot of playing Words with Friends,” says Corey Stoll, who plays eldest brother Paul in the family comedy. “Jason [Bateman] is the best at the game. And Tina [Fey] is really good. But I’m pretty good, too,” Stoll told InStyle, with a sly smile. Swap over to when the cameras started rolling and the fun did not stop.

“One of the first scenes we shot was in the classroom where the brothers get, um, inebriated. It was just so great to see the three brothers together in that dynamic.”

So what was Britton’s favorite scene to shoot? “I did a sex scene with Adam Driver, who, of course, is the king of sex scenes. He wanted to make sure I was comfortable with it, and I’m like, ‘I’m fine, thank you.’ He is very sweet. It’s fun to talk about it now because it’s not in the movie anymore.”

ESPY Awards Exclusive: This Is How Maria Sharapova Got Ready for Her Major Night

The ESPY Awards, aka the biggest night of the year for sports stars to show off what they look like out of their uniforms (hello, hotties!), took place last night and Maria Sharapova looked a-ma-zing. The 27-year-old tennis superstar rocked an Antonio Berardi stretch jersey cocktail dress with lace sleeve detailing to present at the event—and take home the Best Female Tennis Player of the Year award, thankyouverymuch. She accessorized with Walter Steiger shoes, a Bottega Veneta clutch, and jewelry by Irene Neuwirth and Jennifer Fisher. Love that look? So do we! Which is why she snapped pics of her getting-ready process to give us all the exclusive deets.

Check ‘em out below:

2:06 p.m. “Before applying makeup, I use my everyday Supergoop! City Serum ($ 42; sephora.com) to create a good base. Especially for the ESPY Awards—the sun is really strong on the red carpet so a moisturizer with sunscreen is really important. What a glam spread!”

What Books Are InStyle Staffers Reading at the Beach This Summer?

July 3, 2014 @ 12:31 pm

You may be stuck turning pages in a packed subway car rather than lounging poolside, yet a good read offers a quick escape from reality-harsh air conditioning and looming deadlines. We asked InStyle’s staff to divulge what’s on their must-read list for this summer, and received some surprising results.

Many strayed from the standard fluffy beach reading, opting instead for topics varying from advice to cooking, such as Anthony Bourdain’s account of his food-scouring travels. Unsurprisingly, three staffers proposed the newly released The Vacationers, The New York Times bestseller about a family vacation to Mallorca wrought with dysfunction. No matter what you’re in the mood for, we’ve got you covered.
