Why Opt for One Oscars Dress When You Can Wear Two? These Stars Are Pros at the Quick Change

Moments after the cams stopped rolling, the throng of A-listers at the 2015 Oscars flocked to the various after parties scattered around Hollywood, but not without a quick outfit change. While some remained consistent with their designer choice or their red carpet aesthetic, others threw caution to the wind and went for a completely different look. Either way, the result was stunning. We spotlighted 15 stylish stars who turnt up in amazing down-to-party attire.

1. Jennifer Lopez (above)

J.Lo had a real-life Cinderella moment when she swept onto the Oscars red carpet in a billowing Elie Saab Haute Couture creation. But for the after-party, she reverted back to her signature aesthetic with a sheer skin-tight navel-plunging crystal-embroidered Zuhair Murad Couture number.

2. Lupita Nyong’o

Nyong’o caused a stir on the red carpet when she stepped out in a jewelry masterpiece of a dress by Calvin Klein Collection that took months and more than 6,000 pearls to create. After the ceremony, she wore Calvin Klein Collection again but instead, chose a strapless gilded column.

3. Emma Stone

The actress traded in her beaded chartreuse Elie Saab Haute Couture gown for a plunging lace burgundy Altuzarra number off the fall 2015 runway.

4. Margot Robbie

Robbie struck the same pose twice, but in strikingly different looks. The first, in a plunging long-sleeve draped Saint Laurent number, and the second, in a strapless striped ankle-grazing frock.

5. Rita Ora

Ora aimed for the same dramatic mermaid silhouette—a grand gold-embroidered Marchesa piece on the red carpet and a scandalous one-shoulder sheer-back Donna Karan Atelier gown.

6. Solange Knowles

Fashion risk-taker Knowles went for a paprika Christian Siriano crepe top and wide-leg pants at the Oscars. For the after-party, she stuck to the high-neck theme and selected a white crystal beaded Naeem Khan gown.

7. Chrissy Teigen

Teigen dialed up the drama on the red carpet in a plunging icy blue Zuhair Murad Couture dress with a dangerously high slit. She later switched into a playful orange-and-violet color-block cut-out Emilio Pucci column.

8. Marion Cotillard

The Parisian beauty was a vision in a white textural Dior Haute Couture creation—and again later on in the night in playful embellished tiered frock.

9. Lady Gaga

Leave it to Gaga to bring the drama twice. She wore a custom voluminous Azzedine Alaia piece (with red gloves, no less) at the Oscars and a vampy curve-clinging black number at the after-party.

10. Zoe Saldana

New mom Saldana showed off her amazing post-baby physique in a blush Atelier Versace draped number on the red carpet and again in a stunning black-and-white Prabal Gurung piece later that night.

11. Keira Knightley

Expectant mom Knightley dressed her baby bump in a breathtaking Valentino Couture replete with whimsical embroidery. She stuck to the same designer for her after-party look, but left the whimsy aside and went for a classic dark ground-grazing number.

12. Felicity Jones

Jones tapped her inner Victorian both on and off the red carpet. She started her night with a high-neck pale gray embroidered Alexander McQueen ball gown and then changed into an embellished high-neck black column.

13. Naomi Watts

Watts shimmed on the red carpet in a silver scaly Armani Prive creation with black beaded embroidery. Later, she took the menswear route and suited up in a sleek white pantsuit with black accessories.

14. Faith Hill

The singer defined elegance in a plunging draped J. Mendel design (fresh off the fall 2015 runway) at the Oscars. For the after-party, she stuck with the same silhouette, but added a playful edge, courtesy of Armani Prive’s polka dots and ruffled tiers.

15. Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Dewan-Tatum struck a stark contrast with her gowns—a plunging white Zuhair Murad Couture gown for day and a smoldering black lace racer-back Zuhair Murad Couture gown for night.

Happy Birthday, Britney Spears! See the Star’s Best Beauty Moments Through the Years

December 2, 2014 @ 7:14 am

Happy birthday, Britney Spears! The performer rings in her 33rd year today. It seems like just yesterday that the one-time brunette shot to stardom with her single “Baby One More Time” at the age of 16. Since then, the Princess of Pop has delivered chart-topping hits and best-selling fragrances, has launched a lingerie and sleepwear collection, and has even delved into acting with her leading role in 2002’s Crossroads, opposite Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning, and her stint on How I Met Your Mother.

The Grammy winner currently headlines her own Vegas show (she’s had the residency for the past year) and plans to stick around through 2016. It’s been a whirlwind career for Spears—who as a working mom to sons Sean, 9, and Jayden, 8, makes it look seamless—and her recipe for success couldn’t be more straightforward. She tells InStyle, “Finding balance and happiness—and being healthy” are the keys to a fulfilled life.

Happy birthday, Matthew McConaughey! The actor turns 45 today. While his acting career took off from starring in addictive romantic comedies opposite Kate Hudson and Jennifer Lopez, McConaughey has since foregone putting his chiseled abs on full display, and has instead opted for roles of the more dramatic variety.

Cases in point: his critically acclaimed performances in HBO’s True Detective, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club—the last of which earned him his first Oscar. And now, the father of three is adding yet another buzz-worthy movie title to his growing repertoire in Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s latest film that also stars Hollywood heavyweights Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.

How The Fault in Our Stars Costume Designer Discovered Shailene Woodley’s Memorable Blue Dress

Due to the tears spouting from our eye sockets, it was easy for us to glaze over the fashions featured in The Fault in Our Stars. But one article of clothing was impossible to miss. For TFIOS die-hards, surely one of the most poignant scenes in the book is when Hazel, a 16-year-old with thyroid cancer and “an impressive and long-settled satellite colony” in her lungs attends an over-the-top romantic dinner with Gus, a fellow cancer patient and amputee, at a lavish restaurant in Amsterdam that overlooks the city’s canals. For the fancy occasion, Hazel dons a fittingly fancy dress.

So when John Green’s much-adored YA novel was adapted into a film, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Gus, one of the questions on the forefront of our mind was, of course, What would that dress look like? Would the movie stay faithful to the story and outfit Hazel in a “blue-print, flowery knee-length Forever 21 thing,” or would it defer to a stunning piece of designer garb? We reached out to costume designer Mary Claire Hannan to get the full scoop.

First off, how did you find the dress?

Just before I left for Pittsburgh to shoot the movie, I was running through the Beverly Center in West Hollywood in search of last-minute wardrobe treasures. I ran into Halston Heritage and there she was. The dress was a beautiful shade of blue—somewhere between cornflower and French.

In the book, the dress is described a bit differently. Why the change?

I knew the movie was filming in Amsterdam in October, so a sundress was never going to work. This one had a simple silhouette that felt fresh, young, and demure. It was a perfect cinematic match for what I had been looking for.

What was Shailene’s reaction when she tried it on?

It fit her like a glove. She was delighted. We camera-tested it and off we went.

Besides the dress, what were the other important wardrobe choices for the movie?

The Magritte T-shirt she wore to meet Peter Van Houten [author of the faux book An Imperial Affliction]. It was important to make sure the pipe read very well on camera and yet was not so big it overwhelmed the actress. We looked at many hues of color and size before we chose that one. Gus’s leather jacket was also an important piece—it showed he came from a privileged family and it gave him that classic James Dean–leading male look.

This story resonated with a lot of people, and it topped the box office last weekend. Why did you gravitate toward it?

I loved the script and the story—John Green is an amazing writer. I had also just lost my little brother to a similar cancer to Gus’s, so I could relate. At first I thought it would be too difficult to do, but I found making this movie was actually very therapeutic.

Dancing with the Stars’ Karina Smirnoff on Last Night’s Costume: “I Wanted to Make it Simple and Bright!”

March 25, 2014 @ 3:28 pm

When it came time to design this week’s costume, Dancing with the Stars‘ Karina Smirnoff took a straightforward approach. “I wanted to make it simple and bright!” the dancer exclusively tells InStyle.com. Smirnoff and partner Sean Avery performed a Salsa routine; the genre inspired Smirnoff. “I added short yellow ruffles and rhinestones to my dress to support the Cuban theme,” she says, which also accentuated the hip movements.

Karina Smirnoff and Sean Avery earned a 21/30 from the judges, which unfortunately did not earn them a spot on next week’s lineup. They, along with Henry Byalikov and Diana Nyad, were eliminated last night.

Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show. And for exclusive details on Karina Smirnoff’s premiere costume, click here.

First, Roc Nation kicked off the awards celebration with their pre-Grammy Brunch presented by MAC Viva Glam, where InStyle.com caught up with Rihanna, who received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance with Mikky Ekko for their hit song, “Stay.” “That’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever sang and performed,” Rihanna tells reporters. “I’m really excited about that.”

What Do the Stars Love About Designer Tory Burch? Find Out What They Said at Burch’s Rodeo Drive Opening

For Tory Burch‘s grand opening of her West Coast flagship store she enlisted a few of her close friends to help celebrate (and even blogged about it!), including Jessica Alba, Brooklyn Decker, Hailee Steinfeld, Emmy Rossum, Jaime King, and Camila Alves, dressed in Burch’s very own designs. With green hydrangeas arrangements placed throughout the 4,700 square-foot space, guests enjoyed Philly cheesesteaks (a homage to Burch’s hometown), spring rolls, and sugar-dusted doughnut bits, while they sipped on Champagne and Tory’s favorite cocktail—the Southside made with vodka, triple sec, fresh lime juice, and a sprig of lavender.

This may be Burch’s fourth boutique in Los Angeles and her 13th store in California, but it’s her very first Rodeo Drive location. “I think Rodeo is such an iconic location,” the designer told InStyle.com. “I never really dreamed of having a store here and when we started this company, we hoped that one day we would,” she added. Not only did she make that dream come true, but she even custom-designed the space with architect Daniel Romualdez and gave the brick and mortar location a personal touch, complete with black and white photos of the Burch family, flea market finds like tables and mirrors the designer scooped up while traveling in Paris and Morocco, and even needlepoint pillows adorned with quotes from Burch’s childhood, including “Everything begets thee to me.”

Within the the three-story boutique, Burch’s entire collection of ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, jewelry, accessories, including her new fragrance, will be available to shop (not to mention the designer already has a loyal Rodeo Drive following). “I love [Tory's] clothing because it works for the every girl,” Decker told InStyle.com. “You could be a tomboy or an eclectic, crazy quirky style kind of girl or super preppy, and her clothes kind of speak to everyone.” To find what the others stars love about Burch, look through our gallery.
