The Future Is Now: You Can Get a 3D Printed Model of Your Selfie

Paging Kim Kardashian—your selfie-filled book rolling out today just might have some competition: In a move that could possibly one-up the star’s Instagram game, you now have the ability to create a 3D-printed model of your own selfie. Computer vision companies Dacuda and Volumental have partnered to develop an app that will capture a three-dimensional rendering of your face, which will then be printed and transformed into a head model that can fit into the palm of your hand. Pretty cool, and only slightly creepy, right?

After taking a video of a 360-view of your face, the app plots out a depth cloud of the shape, then maps the texture and coloring accordingly. Right away, you’ll get a digital model to use as an avatar or for games, which can then be 3D printed.

As of right now, the app is still in its developmental phase, and its creators have more in mind for it than creating an IRL feed of your most double-tapped shots. “Imagine purchasing perfectly-fitting eyeglasses or helmets from home, or starring in your favorite computer game, all as a result of a 3D head model that you captured on your tablet,” says Caroline Walerud, Volumental CEO. “As this app becomes available on tablets, we will see a number of customizable products that vastly demonstrate how 3D technology can change the products we use every day.”

The concept is pretty cool, but to be honest, we’re not completely sure what we’d do with a 3D printed rendering of our own face—aside from displaying it on our mantle, or maybe swapping it with the head on an old Barbie doll. Scroll down to see what a 3D version of your face looks like, and check out the video on vimeo.com to see the technology in action.

Take Your Selfie Game to the Next Level with Phhhoto, a New Camera App

Get ready for your close-up because the next-generation camera app has finally arrived to revamp your static selfies and bring them to life! Phhhoto is a new social media platform and GIF-generating app that captures life in motion with just one touch thanks to its exclusive, multi-frame camera. The frames are automatically transformed into lively, looping GIFs that users can upload to a feed much like Instagram. Once the image is posted, photos can be commented on, liked, and shared by followers of the page.

The new iPhone app, which launched last week, is already being used by ultra-hip celebs like Katy Perry (below), Mia Moretti, and Diplo.

The app was born when the founders of HyperHyper, a design and technology studio, created it instead of renting a photo booth for their holiday party at the end of 2013. And since then, Phhhoto has been used at hundreds of major parties this year thrown by brands like Red Bull, Adidas, and Time Inc. (which publishes InStyle), and now you can have the popular animated photo booth in the palm of your hand!

The Phhhoto app is free and available for download in the iTunes app store or  here.

Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama Take a Selfie Together

It looks like Jennifer Lopez and Michelle Obama are BFFs. The First Lady is undoubtedly a busy woman, but she made time to take an adorable selfie with the singer yesterday. Lopez first posted the snap on Instagram, and Obama later followed suit. “Me and my girl @flotus at #LULAC National convention for the empowerment of Latinos. #represent #keynotespeaker #introingthekeynotespeaker #dreambig,” Lopez captioned the image.

The duo took the photo at the 2014 LULAC National Convention in New York City, where the singer introduced the First Lady for her speech, which focused on advancing the education, civil rights, and employment of Hispanic-Americans through community-based programs. The ladies were on the same style wavelength for the occasion: Each donned pretty floral ensembles. Lopez dazzled in a pale pink Zuhair Murad couture embroidered appliqué blouse and peplum pencil skirt, while Obama glowed in a white and blue print frock by Tanya Taylor.
