See Insurgent Star Shailene Woodley’s 10 Best Red Carpet Looks Ever!

March 15, 2015 @ 5:01 pm

We’re counting down the days until Insurgent is out (one more week!) and star Shailene Woodley has never looked better onscreen or off. Most recently, for the film’s London premiere on Wednesday, the actress turned heads in a gorgeous ivory Ralph Lauren Collection gown. And according to her stylist, Ilaria Urbinati, there is so much more to come.

“It’s fun to surprise people with fashion,” says Urbanati, who described the star’s style as simple and clean. “Shailene likes to be comfortable and casual in her personal life, but we go big for big events.” Over the years, Woodley has tackled many trends, from colored leather to Hawaiian prints, with her signature effortless ease. “Shailene always stays true to herself,” Urbanati says. “She is five-foot-ten and can wear practically any silhouette or color, but she doesn’t like things that are too fussy or girly.”

And as Woodley’s career evolves, expect her look to follow suit. “Her aesthetic changes from film to film, so it’s my job to find outfits that speak to her and express who she is,” adds Urbanati. No matter what the role, “she goes for the wow moment every single time.”

Runway Looks We Love: Gucci

Designer: Gucci

Season: Fall/winter 2015

Location: Milan

Notable guests: Salma Hayek

What was it like: It was a completely different look for Gucci, with creative director Allesandro Michele now at the helm. The usual runway scenario took a different turn, with the audience in the center of the room on risers, while models walked the outskirts–the exact opposite of the habitual fashion show runway scenario.

Why we love this collection: As InStyle‘s Fashion News Director Eric Wilson notes, the collection was a “flash of excitement and energy that has long been missing in the city.” This took form in washed silk dresses with tiers of ruffles to oddly creased floral-print suits which lead us to believe the following is true: the Contemporary is indeed the Untimely at Gucci these days.

Runway Looks We Love: Ralph Lauren

Designer: Ralph Lauren

Notable Guests: Kanye West

Location: 550 Washington St.

What was it like: A frenzy of flashbulbs ensued as Kanye West entered the swanky chandelier-lit studio space (his first time attending the designer’s show), but as soon as the show began, the entire room instantaneously shifted their focus to a myriad of Western-inspired looks, holding true to Lauren’s sophisticated and timeless style. This time it came in the form of cashmere everything (from turtlenecks to skirts to dresses) in tonal shades, to cozy shearling patchwork coats and vests, to a gorgeous glittering bronze beaded dress complete with a snuggly chic topper and matching gloves.

Why we love this collection: Last season, we were wooed by an inspirational luxury safari theme that had us planning an exotic vacay, but this season, after a seemingly endless winter that just won’t let up, Lauren’s cozy chic collection comprised of layers of cashmere, shearling, and platform boots was exactly what the fashion doctor ordered.

Runway Looks We Love: Vera Wang

Designer: Vera Wang

Location: 545 W. 22nd Street

What was it like: From the moody music to the grey-toned studio space, everything about Vera’s fall 2015 show was inherently sexy (including an appearance by fashion week all-star Kendall Jenner, who pranced down the runway in a cool babydoll-esque LBD).

Why we love this collection: Sure, Vera Wang’s 2015 collection was seeded heavily in black, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t feel the warmth of the collection from start to finish. From oversized fisherman cable pullovers that looked as cozy as they did understatedly sexy, to sultry crepe bustier tops with lace-up detailing that we’d eagerly slip on for a night on the town, the seasoned designer knocked it out of the park once again.

Katy Perry’s Superbowl Halftime Performance Was Epic (Here Are the Looks That Prove It)

Katy Perry is one helluva firework! She blew everyone away during her halftime performance at the XLIX Super Bowl with a kaleidoscopic show that featured a megaton lion, a performance by Lenny Kravitz, a Missy Elliot cameo, and a whopping total of four unforgettable crazy-cool costumes (a feat that we have designer Jeremy Scott to thank).

Girl on Fire (below): The star was on fire from the get-go, making an entrance singing “Roar” perched atop a larger-than-life robotic lion all ablaze in fire-emblazoned separates and glittery booties. She continued to burn bright through “Dark Horse” and an “I Kissed a Girl” duet with Kravitz (who was outfitted in a cool fringed moto jacket, a beaded tank, and destroyed denim).

Life’s a Beach (below): To complement the beach backdrop, complete with trippy life-size palm trees, sharks, and surf boards, Perry switched into a playful beach ball-inspired bustier top with a matching skater skirt to sing “Teenage Dream” and “California Gurls.”

Missy Time (below): During Missy Elliot’s too-cool cameo where she belted out hits “Get Your Freak On” and “Lose Control,” Perry got her freak on in an oversize bedazzled “49” (for the 49th Super Bowl) jersey jacket styled with nothing else except for tights and her booties.

A Starry Finale (below): Perry reached for the stars during her performance of her final song, “Firework,” floating up and across the arena in a shooting star. And she looked the part, with a spangled high-slit gown with iridescent stars affixed all over.

Happy Birthday, Matthew McConaughey! See the Interstellar Star’s Best Red Carpet Looks

Happy birthday, Matthew McConaughey! The actor turns 45 today. While his acting career took off from starring in addictive romantic comedies opposite Kate Hudson and Jennifer Lopez, McConaughey has since foregone putting his chiseled abs on full display, and has instead opted for roles of the more dramatic variety.

Cases in point: his critically acclaimed performances in HBO’s True Detective, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Dallas Buyers Club—the last of which earned him his first Oscar. And now, the father of three is adding yet another buzz-worthy movie title to his growing repertoire in Interstellar, Christopher Nolan’s latest film that also stars Hollywood heavyweights Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.

In honor of McConaughey’s birthday, we’re taking a look back at his red carpet style.

Dressed up or down, this smart, successful, and completely gorgeous star has already been spotted in a multitude of winning looks (along with her unforgettable wedding gown). From the checkered-print Oscar de la Renta dress she wore while hard at work in London (above, left) to the romantic Giambattista Valli couture dress she donned during her wedding weekend (above, middle) and the distressed jeans and moto jacket combo she rocked at the Milan airport (above, right), this barrister’s personal style begs to be noticed.

See Our 3 Favorite Looks From the Cannes Film Festival This Weekend!

While we’re lounging in our relaxed weekend gear, the ladies of the Cannes International Film Festival have been bringing their fashion A-game to the red carpet. Amongst our favorites this weekend? Three dazzling choices by Salma Hayek, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence. Though Hayek chose a straightforward strapless silhouette for the premiere of Saint Laurent, the intense pink by Saint Laurent, aptly, really packed the punch. Plus, the look was in the details. Rather than overly fancy accessories, she chose a black leather studded clutch from the design house. And with the seaside location, her loose highlighted curls were a smart finish. (But it wasn’t all about looks for the actress. Hayek took the red carpet opportunity to support the missing Nigerian schoolgirls by holding up a sign that read: #BringBackOurGirls.) Chastain, meanwhile, also knew her way around the color wheel. For the premiere of her latest film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, the red-haired beauty played up her assets. Wearing an asymmetrical Atelier Versace gown in vivid blue, Chastain was prime example of how to dress for one’s complexion and hair-color. Plus, the gentle draping at the waist, matching Roger Vivier heels and soft Old Hollywood waves added just the right touch of refined elegance. Last but certainly not least, JLaw’s look was no-fuss but hit all the right notes for a film party. To celebrate The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I, the actress wore a layered ensemble just breezy enough for the occasion. Lawrence donned a Dior cobalt tank dress under a sheer, flowy gown. The wow factor? The contrasting emerald green Irene Neuwirth earrings that were an unconventional but smashing pick. Looking for more red carpet fashion highlights? The Best DIY Nail Looks to Try This Spring

Manicurist Madeline Poole, who’s polished up rockers Miley Cyrus and Kesha, created four DIY designs inspired by spring’s top runway trends. With her fresh pointers, you’ll nail these looks faster than you can type #ManiMonday. Find out how to get each look below!

How-Tos From Left to Right:

PASTEL MOONS

With smoky lavender and a pop of soft coral, this is subtle enough to fly at work but cool enough to boost your fashion cred.

1. Apply a base coat.

2. With the coral polish brush (try Nars nail polish in Wind Dancer, $ 19; narscosmetics.com), paint over the natural half-moon shape at the bottom of your nail. Drag the tip of a wooden orange stick along outer edges to perfect the shape. Let dry.

3. Position the lavender polish brush (we love RBG nail polish in Haze, $ 18; rgbcosmetics.com) at the lower-left corner of the nail, above the coral arc, and sweep it diagonally across the surface. Position the brush at the lower-right corner and repeat. Fill in any gaps.

4. Add a topcoat.

POP ART

If these artful streaks feel too daring to brush over all 10 digits, “try them as an accent nail,” Poole says.

1. Apply a base followed by two coats of white polish like

Butter London’s Nail Lacquer in Cotton Buds ($ 15; ulta.com). Let dry.

2. Paint on one stripe of red polish; allow edges to appear uneven. Repeat with yellow and green. We recommend Sally Hansen’s I Heart Nail Art Stripers ($ 4 each; ulta.com). Let dry.

3. Paint on several streaks of black polish, like Orly’s Instant Artist Lacquer in Jet Black ($ 7; orlybeauty.com), in varying lengths.

4. Add a topcoat.

GRAPHIC MINIMALISM

Never cared for coloring inside the lines? Use a long, thin striping brush from a crafts store to draw these V-shapes and keep you on the straight and narrow.

1. Apply a base, then two coats of opaque white polish. Let dry.

2. Grab the black polish and place the tip of the brush on the outer edge of the nail; sweep it over to the center. Repeat, starting at the other outer nail edge.

3. Make a dot at the center of the nail; sweep the brush from that dot out toward the tip, creating a V-shape. Fill in any gaps.

4. Add a topcoat.

BOLD FLORALS

This splashy tip is a cinch to master, if you just keep the shapes abstract, says Poole.

1. Start with a base coat, then add two layers of navy. Poole used Deborah Lippmann Nail Lacquer in Rolling in the Deep ($ 18; deborahlippmann.com). Let dry.

2. Paint a few short streaks of green polish over the nail, pointing the ends so they resemble leaves.

3. Next to the streaks, dab and swirl the tip of the purple polish brush (try Ginger & Liz Nail Lacquer in Total Control, $ 12; gingerandliz.com) to make petal-like shapes. Repeat with coral polish. We love Chanel’s Le Vernis Nail Colour in Orange Fizz ($ 27; chanel.com).

4. Dot the yellow pen over petals.

5. Apply a topcoat.
