Bradley Cooper’s Stylist Says His Oscars 2015 Look Will Be “Timeless Like Carey Grant”

When you’re nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role at the Academy Awards, you better believe you put a lot of thought into your outfit. American Sniper‘s Bradley Cooper already is—well, kind of; his stylist Ilaria Urbanati is doing the thinking for him. And it’s going to be timeless. “Bradley really likes to go old-fashioned, like Carey Grant,” she told InStyle at the launch party for her Eddie Bauer men’s capsule collection at the Sundance Film Festival. “I think it’s important to be able to look back at photos from awards shows in fifty years and see something that still looks good after all that time.”

That being said, the search for the perfect tux has already begun. Urbanati said “almost every label” has offered to create a custom look for Cooper. But she’s not doing custom—they don’t want to commit to one thing. “I always bring a lot of options for Bradley, but he always goes very classic for the Oscars,” she said. “He might do a midnight or a black, but I don’t see any color happening. But it’s really going to be a case of ‘may the best tux win.’” Game on, menswear designers! We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled.

12 Monkeys Premieres Tonight: Star Emily Hampshire Reveals What It’s Like to Take On Brad Pitt’s Iconic Movie Role

It may sound crazy, but Emily Hampshire is basically Brad Pitt. Don’t believe us? Just wait until you see her portrayal of a mental patient in Syfy’s new time-traveling series, 12 Monkeys. The Canadian actress takes on the female version of a character originally portrayed by Pitt in the 1995 film of the same title. “The writers didn’t know how anybody was going to live up to Brad’s part, so they changed the role to a woman,” Hampshire told InStyle during a recent visit to our New York offices. “His character’s name is Jeffrey Goines, and I’m Jennifer Goines.”

Despite the gender switch-up in the modern day take on the cult-classic, Hampshire said she was under “a lot of pressure” when reprising the role of Goines, who is enlisted to help a time traveler (played by James Cole) from the future as he tries to save the population from a deadly virus. “It’s the same character, but I’m not doing an impression of his performance—it’s totally new,” she said.

Fans of the original 12 Monkeys will appreciate subtle nods to the original film. “They made a replica of the sweater that Brad wore in the movie,” Hampshire said. “It’s this grungy velour sweater from the nineties. Fans went crazy when they saw pictures of me wearing it at Comic-Con!” That one pullover is as far as it goes when it comes to similarities between Jeffrey and Jennifer Goines’s wardrobes.

Spoiler alert: Hampshire revealed that her character “comes into a lot of money” following a plot twist, and “starts wearing Christian Louboutins and Yves Saint Laurent dresses.” The actress just wishes that she knew how stylish her costumes would be when she first took on the role. “I thought my character would be wearing pajama pants in the hospital the whole time,” she said. “Now I wish I had asked to keep my wardrobe!”

Tune in to the show tonight, Jan. 16, at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.

Travel Like an Editor: InStyle’s Fashion Director Melissa Rubini Goes To St. Bart

I really needed a break! And for that, there is always St. Bart’s.

St. Bart’s (or St. Barthelemy) is an island in the Caribbean with French heritage and lots of glamour. Get ready to rub shoulders with celebrities and the most stylish fashion crowd from around the globe. Although, don’t worry, relaxing is what it is all about– having a very laid back couple of days in the sun, cocktails and laughs.

This tiny island is one of those places that I can go to and leave all my worries and stress behind – massages by the beach anyone? My life is so hectic with fashion shoots, deadlines, travel and crazy schedules. So when I go, it’s very much about recharging, being in the sun and having a glass of rose in the end of the day (my favorite while there is Domaines Ott). It’s about letting go of schedules and having fun with your kids.

To make your life easier and enjoy the perfect stay, go to Wimco Villas (wimco.com). There you will find a range of villas offering a wide variety of sizes, amenities, and prices. They assign you a concierge and take care of everything, from flights (try TradeWind, one step short of having your own private jet), airport transfers, rental cars, reservations for anything and everything … believe me, it’s a complete package, and I am not one to be easily pleased.

I absolutely love cooking while I am there! To be able to go to the boulangerie (French for bakery) in the morning after doing yoga and pick up fresh croissants or stop by the market on your way back from the beach (definitely checkout Saline beach, my fave) to get the catch of the day plus fresh vegetables is just heaven. (Besides, it’s much more budget-friendly than room service and restaurants!) Never fear, if cooking is not your thing, go to Maya’s or Bonito (the best ceviches) for dinner or Do Brasil for lunch at the beach and an amazing passion fruit caipirinha – I am Brazilian after all!

The whole feeling of the island is the perfect marriage of glam and down-to-earth– isn’t that what InStyle girls are all about? Leave your heels behind and get ready to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. So often we get very much attached to a certain look … but it’s vacation time so, feel free to try something new! How about more color? Or 60’s Brigitte Bardot for inspiration? Whatever it is, have fun with it! Create a character for yourself.

Because I’m a stylist, I do that with the celebrities we photograph. I project all of the other women that I could possibly dress like on photo shoots, so when it comes to vacation, it’s time for me to try something fun on myself. Day to day, I would never wear a white eyelet dress, that’s just too girly for me. And it’s not every day that I would wear coral nails with pink lipstick and pile on Delfina Delettrez rings with different colored stones. But in St. Bart’s, I will totally go for it. It helps you get away from your reality. Go ahead, break your rules—that’s what vacations are for.

And for me, there’s no better place for rule breaking than St. Bart’s.

Holiday How To: Apply False Lashes Like a Pro in 4 Easy Steps

Unleash your red lips, gilded eyes, and sparkly nails. The holidays are the prime time to experiment with show-stopping beauty looks that, in any other season, may be a bit over-the-top. Lashes are one of the easiest ways to glam up your look, and add serious drama to your peepers, but don’t let the glue scare you offit’s surprisingly easy to master the look. Just follow this insider advice from Executive Editor Amy Synnott.

Why We Love Them …

1. They’re like a shot of 5-Hour Energy for your lids. A few well-placed lashes on the outer corners of your eyes give the illusion of lift, making you look more wide-eyed and alert.

2. They can take years off your face. Did you know that thinning lashes-along with droopy lids and hot flashesis a sign of menopause? No need to lose your flutter: Think of falsies as hormone-replacement therapy for your lash line.

3. They’re festive. Like a crystal-encrusted minaudiere or giant sparkly danglers, faux lashes boost the glam factor of even the simplest LBD.

Think Small

What, you’re not hosting a live New Year’s Eve webcast from the heart of Times Square? Then put down the Jumbotron strips and grab a few small clusters. After all, you want people to notice you, not your obvious strip fringe. Follow these four steps for look-at-me lashes that are believable too:

1. Curl. It’s best to curl lashes before you apply mascara and fakes; otherwise, you risk ripping the falsies out. We are obsessed with this new tool from makeup artist Troy Surratt ($ 25; barneys.com): It’s slightly less curved than the typical curler, so it never pinches the skin on your upper lid.

2. Coat. To keep the drag queen effect in check, choose a lengthening formula (avoid waterproof versions, which tend to clump). Apply two thin coats (MAC Cosmetics Mineralize Multi-Effect Lash Mascara in Charged Black, $ 22; maccosmetics.com), then separate lashes with a teensy comb.

3. Apply. Put a drop of tinted lash glue (Duo Eyelash Adhesive in Dark, $ 6; ulta.com) onto tin foil and pick up a cluster with tweezers or a lash tool (Sephora Bulls Eye Applicator, $ 12; sephora.com). Wait 45 seconds for glue to get tacky, then dip the root into it (Eylure Pro-Lash lashes, $ 6; ulta.com). Nestle strip into the base of lashes (it shouldn’t touch skin).

4. Line. Apply three or four clusters moving from the middle of the eye outward. Mix it up: short ones closer to the nose, longer ones at the outer edges. Don’t clamp the lash. Let it dry naturally, then outline with a thin swipe of black liquid liner (Lancome Artliner Precision Felt-Tip Liquid Liner, $ 31; lancome.com) to fill in gaps and hide the glue.
