In this episode, we see her slowly transform through her wardrobe choices. “We started her in dark navy pajamas, then moved to the black Armani suit, then on to lighter colors as the show progressed,” Scandal costume designer, Lyn Paolo, tells InStyle. “Now she’s doing her ‘Olivia Pope’ thing!” By the end of the episode, she’s even wearing a white jacket (Alexander McQueen)—the ultimate Gladiator look.

How to Lose Those Last 5 Pounds, Straight from Megan Fox’s Trainer

With swimsuit season fast approaching, those of us who gained weight over the holidays are finally starting to kick our butts into shape. But anyone who’s ever dieted knows that those last five pounds are by far the hardest to shed. It’s not enough that you need to lose it, but it’s enough that, if you actually manage to get rid of it, you’ll feel infinitely better about those flouncy spring dresses you just ordered online. For a dose of much-needed fitspo, we turned to fashionwire.com/celebrity-fashion” target=”_self”>celebrity trainer and New Balance brand ambassador Harley Pasternak, who sculpts Megan Fox, Halle Berry, and Rihanna’s rock-hard bods, among others.

The fitness pro’s new 300-plus page tome, aptly titled 5 Pounds ($ 17; amazon.com), outlines a simple slim-down plan that promises to not only make you drop the specified amount of weight in five days flat, but also help you achieve your long-term weight goals with easy-to-make recipes and specially designed workouts that can be tailored to your specific abilities. For a quick cheat sheet, Pasternak shared seven nuggets of wisdom exclusively with InStyle that he’s confident will tip the scales. Read on below!

1. Walk everywhere. Wear a Fitbit ($ 100; fitbit.com) and make sure you log at least 10,000 steps each day. “In the morning, ditch the coffee machine at home and force yourself to walk to a local cafe instead,” says Pasternak. “If you have a phone call, try to make it on the move!”

2. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier. Myriad studies show lack of sleep can lead to weight gain.

3. Snack on strained yogurt. Research shows the populations that eat protein-rich dairy have lower body fat levels and longer lifespans. Pasternak’s suggestion? Kick off your day with a cup of Siggi’s yogurt topped with a handful of blackberries.

4. Stay hydrated. Dehydration can actually make us feel hungry, and lead to more eating. “I tell all my clients to drink at least six water bottles a day,” says Pasternak.

5. Leave your cell phone in the kitchen at night. The temptation to look at it and the distraction of it buzzing and flickering throughout the night can negatively impact your sleep.

6. Happy feet = more calories burned! Wearing the right shoes will make us more likely to move more often. Pasternak’s shoe of choice? His collection for New Balance, natch.

7. Blend at least one meal a day. We all have that one meal each day that we tend to be less healthy with. According to Pasternak, this is the perfect time to make a fiber and protein-packed smoothie. “Try adding yogurt, apple, banana, spinach, almond, and cinnamon to a really good blender,” he says.

Kate Middleton Recycles a Midnight Blue Dress for Her Last Night in NYC

December 9, 2014 @ 11:33 pm

So nice that she wore it–not twice–but thrice! The Duchess of Cambridge has been the talk of the town this week in New York City as she and Prince William continue to make the most of their whirlwind tour of the Big Apple, and her outfit selections have certainly been a popular part of the conversation.

Tuesday night, the Duchess of Cambridge chose an off the shoulder ink blue silk tulle frock with a black velvet belt by British designer Jenny Packham to attend the St. Andrews 600th Anniversary Dinner at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (above, left)–but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen her in it.

Kate first wore the gown to the 100 Women in Hedge Funds event back in 2013 (above, right) and later, she resurfaced the dress for her first public appearance of 2014 at The National Portrait Gallery in February (above, middle). But on this most recent occasion, she accessorized the gown a little differently than ever before–with a baby bump!

Earlier on Tuesday, the expectant Duchess and the Prince made a stop at the Creativity is GREAT event, which was held at NeueHouse especially in their honor, before making their way downtown for a touching stop at the 9/11 Memorial, rocking a $ 99 black turtleneck dress and bright pink Mulberry coat for the occasion. No matter what part of the world she’s in, we continue to admire the Duchess for her ongoing effort to keep it real when it comes to mixing affordable pieces into her wardrobe, and re-wearing many of her favorites.

Dancing with the Stars’ Karina Smirnoff on Last Night’s Costume: “I Wanted to Make it Simple and Bright!”

March 25, 2014 @ 3:28 pm

When it came time to design this week’s costume, Dancing with the Stars‘ Karina Smirnoff took a straightforward approach. “I wanted to make it simple and bright!” the dancer exclusively tells InStyle.com. Smirnoff and partner Sean Avery performed a Salsa routine; the genre inspired Smirnoff. “I added short yellow ruffles and rhinestones to my dress to support the Cuban theme,” she says, which also accentuated the hip movements.

Karina Smirnoff and Sean Avery earned a 21/30 from the judges, which unfortunately did not earn them a spot on next week’s lineup. They, along with Henry Byalikov and Diana Nyad, were eliminated last night.

Tune in next Monday night at 8/7c on ABC for the live results show. And for exclusive details on Karina Smirnoff’s premiere costume, click here.
