The One Thing You Need from the Lulu Frost + West Elm Collaboration

Acquiring new jewelry is all well and good—until you need to find a place to store it (preferably somewhere that doesn’t result in a gigantic knot of tangled necklaces). Thankfully, Lulu Frost has a pretty solution. The New York-based jeweler known for her glitzy, vintage-inspired aesthetic has finally made her foray into the world of home décor, teaming up with West Elm on a four-piece line of jewelry storage accessories. And while the collection includes two small storage boxes and sorting trays, the item we’re raring to pick up ASAP is most definitely the jewelry storage case.

The lacquered wood box (photo above), complete with embellished drawer pulls, promises to be a saving grace for anyone’s rapidly increasing jewelry collection. With six separate shelving compartments, two drawers, and a handy grate to hang multiple pairs of earrings, the case acts as the ultimate storage solution, and won’t look out of place atop your vanity or your dresser. “It’s a gorgeous and convenient way to stash all of your favorite pieces,” Lulu Frost designer Lisa Salzer tells InStyle. “Jewelry is beautiful, so its container should be equally so!” We don’t disagree.

Shop the whole collection at westelm.com or at West Elm stores beginning March 26.

How to Lose Those Last 5 Pounds, Straight from Megan Fox’s Trainer

With swimsuit season fast approaching, those of us who gained weight over the holidays are finally starting to kick our butts into shape. But anyone who’s ever dieted knows that those last five pounds are by far the hardest to shed. It’s not enough that you need to lose it, but it’s enough that, if you actually manage to get rid of it, you’ll feel infinitely better about those flouncy spring dresses you just ordered online. For a dose of much-needed fitspo, we turned to fashionwire.com/celebrity-fashion” target=”_self”>celebrity trainer and New Balance brand ambassador Harley Pasternak, who sculpts Megan Fox, Halle Berry, and Rihanna’s rock-hard bods, among others.

The fitness pro’s new 300-plus page tome, aptly titled 5 Pounds ($ 17; amazon.com), outlines a simple slim-down plan that promises to not only make you drop the specified amount of weight in five days flat, but also help you achieve your long-term weight goals with easy-to-make recipes and specially designed workouts that can be tailored to your specific abilities. For a quick cheat sheet, Pasternak shared seven nuggets of wisdom exclusively with InStyle that he’s confident will tip the scales. Read on below!

1. Walk everywhere. Wear a Fitbit ($ 100; fitbit.com) and make sure you log at least 10,000 steps each day. “In the morning, ditch the coffee machine at home and force yourself to walk to a local cafe instead,” says Pasternak. “If you have a phone call, try to make it on the move!”

2. Go to bed 30 minutes earlier. Myriad studies show lack of sleep can lead to weight gain.

3. Snack on strained yogurt. Research shows the populations that eat protein-rich dairy have lower body fat levels and longer lifespans. Pasternak’s suggestion? Kick off your day with a cup of Siggi’s yogurt topped with a handful of blackberries.

4. Stay hydrated. Dehydration can actually make us feel hungry, and lead to more eating. “I tell all my clients to drink at least six water bottles a day,” says Pasternak.

5. Leave your cell phone in the kitchen at night. The temptation to look at it and the distraction of it buzzing and flickering throughout the night can negatively impact your sleep.

6. Happy feet = more calories burned! Wearing the right shoes will make us more likely to move more often. Pasternak’s shoe of choice? His collection for New Balance, natch.

7. Blend at least one meal a day. We all have that one meal each day that we tend to be less healthy with. According to Pasternak, this is the perfect time to make a fiber and protein-packed smoothie. “Try adding yogurt, apple, banana, spinach, almond, and cinnamon to a really good blender,” he says.

Rebecca Minkoff Is Essie’s Global Color Designer! Get the Nail Art From Her #NYFW Show

Rebecca Minkoff is about to redesign your manicure wardrobe! Just before showing her fall 2015 collection at New York Fashion Week, Essie announced Minkoff’s new role as the Global Color Designer, and will be launching her first collaboration with the brand next month for spring. “It’s so exciting! Rebecca is so passionate about color, so I wasn’t surprised when the announcement was made,” says Michelle Saunders, lead manicurist at Minkoff’s show. “As soon as I heard, I said, ‘You know what? You do the nails! You pick the colors out.’” To determine exactly which colors to incorporate into the runway show, Minkoff drew inspiration from both the clothing and accessories. “When we did the test, Rebecca had her model hold a handbag after we painted the design,” Saunders adds. “Her handbags are really vibrant, so we had to make sure the colors would still show up against that.”

While the crisp lines may look intimidating for nail art novices, the effect is one of the easiest to master–it’s all in how you angle the brush. “The width of the stripe is the width of the brush, so the brush does all of the work for you,” says Saunders. After a layer of Essie’s Mademoiselle ($ 8.50; essie.com), Saunders picked up the Berry Naughty hue ($ 8.50; essie.com) and directed the brush upward toward the tip in a V shape. She then took the deep navy Midnight Cami shade ($ 8.50; essie.com) and followed the same motions just above the red portion. “You’re basically drawing a little X at the top of your nails,” she adds. “What you’d want to do is paint all ten nails in Mademoiselle, then do the criss-cross on all ten with Berry Naughty. Once you get around to adding the blue, the rest of the pattern is dry and ready for the next step.” To finish, Saunders added a layer of the Good to Go Top Coat ($ 8.50; essie.com) to seal in the design.

The Story Behind Julianne Moore Weaning Herself from “Intellectual Fashion”

This isn’t Julianne Moore’s first time doing the Oscar circuit, but it’s arguably her best dressed awards season yet. At yesterday’s 87th Annual Academy Awards Nominee Luncheon, the Best Actress nominee wowed in a red flared peplum top and fringed pencil skirt by Prabal Gurung—but at the event Moore recalled a time when her fashion choices weren’t so on point.

“Maybe I’ll get a laugh with this! The first time I went to the Oscar nominee lunch, I had just had a baby,” Moore reveals. “My publicist Stephen met me at the curb, and I got out of the car—I had decided to wear a coat, like a daycoat, a boxy coat—and he said, ‘Oh, my gosh. We have got to get you away from that intellectual fashion. That’s ridiculous!’ So anyway, the moral of the story is that I feel more comfortable now. My children are older, so I don’t have to wear something so misshaped.”

The Still Alice star also shared that this year’s group of nominees have made her experience incredible. “Oh, it’s so fantastic,” Moore says. “We’ve all gotten to know each other. It’s always exciting to see people. I’ve worked with so many of the other nominees. And this is lovely. It’s a great celebration.”

Haute Moments from the Dior Couture Show: Crazy Onesies, Fancy Raincoats, and More

Paris Couture Fashion Week is officially off! Last season, we saw some zany prints (think: rats and pigeons), cool gown-pant hybrids, and couture bike shorts sprinkled amid breathtaking creations. We didn’t think it was possible, but this season, couturiers have truly one-upped themselves.

To wit: Raf Simons inspired awe and shock when he opened the Dior Haute Couture spring 2015 show with what could be mistaken for raincoats, albeit fancy raincoats (below). The idyllic plastic toppers, crafted from what we can only venture to guess was PVC printed with scenic florals, practically upstaged the sequin-encrusted minis underneath.

But if that didn’t elicit shock, the line-up of crazy one-pieces sure will. There were some wonderfully and chaotically printed in haphazard lines punctuated with graphic shapes, while there were others  that were striped and doused in all-over sequins (above).

And there were, of course, beautiful pannier-style pieces (a silhouette that carried over from last season) and other dreamy numbers to cry (slash drool) over. Ahead, check out the other couture moments from Dior, along with Atelier Versace, Schiaparelli, and more.

It’s Katy Perry’s 30th Birthday! See Her Transform from High School Freshman to Pop Queen

October 25, 2014 @ 8:10 am

Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, the wildly personable and international pop icon Katy Perry rings in the big 3-0 today, but that’s not all the singer has to celebrate.

Since her introductory days into the music industry as a gospel singer (adorable, right?), the “Roar” songstress has solidified her place among the best-selling artists of all time after her Teenage Dream album became the first by a female artist to produce five No. 1 songs in a row. All in a day’s work for Katy Perry, but that’s what you’d expect from an artist who has sold more than 72 million digital singles, which made her the best-selling digital singles artist in the U.S. earlier this year. And as if you aren’t already impressed, Katy added Twitter tycoon to her already extensive list of accolades when she became the first person to hit 50 million followers, which broke the Guinness World Record for most Twitter followers and officially inspired us to step up our social-media game.

Ever the daring, fashion-forward trendsetter, word on the street is Katy is in the market to produce her own fashion brand, a move that will surely send every Katy Cat clamoring for a piece of the “Firework” singer’s audacious style. Speaking of which, we can’t wait to see what crowd-pleasing fashion liberties she will take when she headlines the 2015 Super Bowl XLIX halftime show on Feb. 1.

Is there anything this superwoman can’t do? Katy Perry for president! Just kidding, but really.

How Portia de Rossi Went from Being a Scandal Super Fan to Star

Portia de Rossi, just like the rest of us, is totally obsessed with Scandal. But the difference is, she gets to experience the ultimate dream come true for any fan since she now appears on the drama. The actress stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! where she discussed, among other things (including those ever-persistent baby rumors), how she lobbied hard to be on the series.

“I hounded [Scandal creator] Shonda Rhimes,” de Rossi said. “She took a meeting with me, which was so exciting to get to be in the same room with her and talk about her amazing, amazing shows.” When de Rossi didn’t immediately hear back from Rhimes, she expected she didn’t get a part, but eventually she got a fateful call from her agent (which she hilariously misinterpreted at first to be “scandal news” instead of “Scandal news”) and the rest is television history.

The actress, who rocked the ever-stylish crop, also discussed how her character’s arc is a “little open ended … I’m doing everything I can do stay alive!” Watch the entire Scandal chat here, including de Rossi telling a very funny anecdote about forgetting her character’s name at her first table read:

Happy 45th Birthday, Gwen Stefani! From Punk Princess to Glamour Queen, See Her Best Beauty Moments

Happy birthday, Gwen Stefani! The positively ageless performer turns 45 today. Best known for being the frontwoman of No Doubt, Stefani has certainly come a long way since her combat boot-wearing and mesh top-rocking days (though we’re still big fans of her punk rock roots!) The Voice coach and L.A.M.B. designer can put a glamorous spin on any outfit, as we saw at this year’s VMAs and Emmys, and isn’t afraid to stand out—in fact, her signature edgy-chic look is her trademark. “I’m the girl who would wear baggy jeans but didn’t forget to put on tons of makeup,” Stefani has said of her early days with No Doubt. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!

The Explicit Scene You Won’t See in This Is Where I Leave You! Plus More Candid Moments Straight from the Cast

What happens when you put Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Connie Britton, Kathryn Hahn, Jane Fonda, Corey Stoll, and Adam Driver in a house together for a whole straight week? A lot of funny stories, apparently!

When we caught up with the stars of the film This Is Where I Leave You in Toronto at InStyle and Forevermark’s pop-up portrait lounge, they shared some behind the scenes moments with us, and one hot scene that ended up ended up on the cutting room floor. “I had the best time making this movie,” Britton, who plays Tracy, the spicy older girlfriend to Driver’s character, Phillip, told InStyle. “We were shooting at a house in Long Island and we had a bedroom assigned to us to all hang out in between scenes, so we would be together for 12 hours a day in this one room.”

Sounds fitting for a movie that is about a family that is reunited after the death of their father, whose last wish was for his family to sit shiva for one week in their mother’s home. “There was a lot of playing Words with Friends,” says Corey Stoll, who plays eldest brother Paul in the family comedy. “Jason [Bateman] is the best at the game. And Tina [Fey] is really good. But I’m pretty good, too,” Stoll told InStyle, with a sly smile. Swap over to when the cameras started rolling and the fun did not stop.

“One of the first scenes we shot was in the classroom where the brothers get, um, inebriated. It was just so great to see the three brothers together in that dynamic.”

So what was Britton’s favorite scene to shoot? “I did a sex scene with Adam Driver, who, of course, is the king of sex scenes. He wanted to make sure I was comfortable with it, and I’m like, ‘I’m fine, thank you.’ He is very sweet. It’s fun to talk about it now because it’s not in the movie anymore.”
