See Which Film Won Movie of the Year at the MTV Movie Awards

April 12, 2015 @ 10:34 pm

After an extremely eventful night filled with Vin Diesels’s Paul Walker tribute, Robert Downey Jr.s’ Generation Award acceptance speech, and more, the biggest moment of the 2015 MTV Movie Awards came when Dwayne Johnson—aka The Rock—presented the Movie of the Year award to the cast of The Fault in Our Stars. The heart wrenching film, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, beat out American Sniper, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, Guardians of the Galaxy, Gone Girl, Boyhood, Whiplash, and Selma.

It was a big night for The Fault in Our Stars, which is based on John Green’s young-adult novel, as Woodley took home two other popcorn awards for the film: one for Best Female Performance and the other for Best Kiss, which she shared with Ansel Elgort who was noticeably absent from the ceremony. But Elgort took to Twitter to let his fans know he was tuned in! The actor tweeted “Watching the MTV movie awards from providence because I’m filming tomorrow at 6am. Wish I could be there :( Rooting for u shai!! #tfios.”

Congrats to the cast!

Get an Exclusive Peek at Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl’s Film Debut for La Mer

One of our favorite style couples, Olivia Palermo and her husband, Johannes Huebl, are starring in the first film in a series for luxurious skin care line La Mer, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek!

Called “Illuminating Moments,” the short films are part of a global digital campaign featuring glamorous couples from around the world. It officially launches on La Mer’s site tomorrow, along with the company’s newest innovation: its Illuminating Eye Gel ($ 145; cremedelamer.com), made from the same magical ingredients as one of La Mer’s most popular products, the moisturizing cream Crème de la Mer (something everyone at InStyle happens to be obsessed with). It brightens eyes on contact and fights early signs of aging.

The series will feature three short vignettes showcasing beautiful and successful couples from New York City, Paris, and Seoul, who each represent modern love. Palermo and Huebl are at the center of the first story, and in the gorgeous video below, the fashion power couple is captured sharing a moment in their busy lives that’s punctuated with missed connections.

Palermo chatted exclusively with InStyle about working with her husband, the makeup line that changed her life, and her favorite La Mer product.

What was it like to work with your husband?

Oh, it was wonderful. We really enjoy working together. It wasn’t our first day, and hopefully it won’t be our last. With Johannes being a photographer and also being a model for 17, 18 years, and myself being a model, it just made it nice. We always give little suggestions to one another, but it was a good day, and I think as a team it was awesome and we all had fun.

Have you been a fan of La Mer for a long time? Has it been one of your go-to brands?

I love La Mer products. I mean, who doesn’t? La Mer is amazing. I definitely incorporate La Mer into my skin regimen. One of my favorites is the body creme. The Illuminating Eye Gel is fantastic. I’m a person who prefers serum over heavier creams—it’s just lighter for my skin. Each skin type is different, so you have to see what works for you. I really like the history behind La Mer, and there’s elements that come from the ocean, and Johannes and I are very much into water and the beach and I definitely feel, when I come back from being on the beach, that my skin has a little bit of a difference, so if La Mer can help me achieve that, I think that’s awesome.

In the winter, when you’re inside and it’s cold, do you feel your skin change?

For sure. For me, I’m constantly traveling, so my skin is in the sky most of the time, and it’s dry on the airplane. It’s very important to stay hydrated. There’s a combination of things: It’s a combination between making sure you stay hydrated, and your diet—that you’re eating all your fruits and vegetables.

In the video you two are getting ready for a night out. Is that really what it looks like when you get ready? Do you help each other?

Johannes and I, we really get ready separately, but I think it’s nice sometimes when you’re getting ready, sometimes you talk to each other running through the apartment. Every once in a while I might ask him to help with one of my tricky zippers—which everyone has, I’m sure, in their closet—and then he comes to my rescue and helps me with a clasp or a zipper, but other than that, we meet at the door like you see at the end of the movie.

I love the subtle cat eye that you’re wearing in the video. Is that that something you can do yourself?

Oh, definitely! I think it’s important to experiment with makeup and have experts explain different ways for you to try something at home. And I’ve been so fortunate for years to work with the best hair and makeup people, so I’ve picked up one or two tips along the way, and I just know that there are different shapes that can work for me. Luckily, I’m able to do my own hair and makeup, so if I want to do a round eye, or smoky eye, or cat eye, I can achieve them.

What are some of the best makeup tips you’ve learned?

Well, I think Charlotte Tilbury has an amazing makeup line that I’ve worn this past year. It’s changed my life. I think it goes back to skin regimens and different products to use. Each person’s skin and type is different. For me, I really like powders for eye shadows, and I like pencils for eyeliner and not necessarily gels—my eyes get a little irritated by that. And then, you just have to figure out which products work because they’re all different and some of them have different formulas, and also you have to remember that sometimes the formulas change throughout the year.

6 Reasons We’re Excited About the Toronto International Film Festival

September 3, 2014 @ 10:10 am

Canada, we’re coming! The annual Toronto International Film Festival kicks off Thursday, Sept. 4, and Team InStyle is heading up north to be on the front lines of all the action. The city basically transforms into a mini-Hollywood for 10 days, complete with oodles of movie premieres, an influx of stars, tons of eye-catching red carpet looks, and, of course, amazing parties. Here’s what we’re looking forward to most:

1. InStyle HQ at Storys

We’ve dispatched our editors to get the scoop straight from the stars, who will all be visiting us at our pop-up portrait studio at the historic Storys Building in the heart of the city’s downtown area. Photographer Jerome Corpuz will be snapping shots of celebs like Naomi Watts and Melissa McCarthy of St. Vincent, Jennifer Garner of Men, Women & Children, and so much more (get a first look at his portraits on Instagram @instylemagazine!). Plus, we’re throwing a party for all of our favorite TIFF-goers at the Windsor Arms Hotel. Make sure you get the latest news on news.instyle.com and follow @instyle on Twitter for updates.

2. The Oscar Buzz Has Already Started

The festival is where the Oscar race unofficially begins—last year we got a first look at Dallas Buyers Club and 12 Years a Slave for example—which makes it all the more fun to check out this year’s new lineup of buzzworthy flicks. The ones topping our must-see list include Foxcatcher with Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo, The Theory of Everything with Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, Wild with Reese Witherspoon, and The Imitation Game with Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.

3. You Will See Directorial Debuts from Some Really Cool People

Chris Evans (yes, Captain America himself) premieres his first movie Before We Go on Sept. 12, a romantic film about a man and woman who meet for one epic night in New York City. Plus, Jon Stewart goes behind the camera for Rosewater, which tells the story of a journalist who was imprisoned after an interview he conducted during the Iranian elections. This is the film Stewart took a sabbatical from The Daily Show for, and early reviews say it will have a tremendous impact.

4. There Will Be Laughs Too
St. Vincent is Bill Murray’s newest movie, in which he plays a curmudgeon who befriends the son of Melissa McCarthy’s character and teaches the little guy the ways of life. TIFF is so excited about a new BM flick, the fest created an entire Bill Murray Day on Sept. 5 to coincide with the premiere. Then, Adult Beginners stars Kroll Show‘s Nick Kroll, a yuppie who crashes and retreats to the home where he grew up. (Rose Byrne and Joel McHale also star.) Plus, Chris Rock’s Top Five about a comedian-turned-actor trying to figure out his next project stars Gabrielle Union, Rosario Dawson, Kevin Hart, and Tracy Morgan, in addition to Rock, who wrote and directed.

5. The Ensemble Movies Have Some Really Great Casts
Last year’s epic ensemble movie was August: Osage County, which turned out Oscar nods for Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep. This year, there are ensembles just as exciting, such as This Is Where I Leave You (Jane Fonda, Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Rose Byrne), Men, Women & Children (Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Rosemarie DeWitt, Ansel Elgort, Emma Thompson), and Cake (Jennifer Aniston, Anna Kendrick, Sam Worthington, William H. Macy).

6. We Predict the Stars Will Bring It with Fashion
We expect our style radars to max out with so many gorgeous stars hitting up the festival, including Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Garner, Keira Knightley, Jessica Chastain, Anna Kendrick, Salma Hayek, Naomi Watts, and more. Plus, Armani is the official sponsor of the festival this year, for the first time ever, so if there is an Armani outfit overload, you’ll know why.

See Our 3 Favorite Looks From the Cannes Film Festival This Weekend!

While we’re lounging in our relaxed weekend gear, the ladies of the Cannes International Film Festival have been bringing their fashion A-game to the red carpet. Amongst our favorites this weekend? Three dazzling choices by Salma Hayek, Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence. Though Hayek chose a straightforward strapless silhouette for the premiere of Saint Laurent, the intense pink by Saint Laurent, aptly, really packed the punch. Plus, the look was in the details. Rather than overly fancy accessories, she chose a black leather studded clutch from the design house. And with the seaside location, her loose highlighted curls were a smart finish. (But it wasn’t all about looks for the actress. Hayek took the red carpet opportunity to support the missing Nigerian schoolgirls by holding up a sign that read: #BringBackOurGirls.) Chastain, meanwhile, also knew her way around the color wheel. For the premiere of her latest film The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, the red-haired beauty played up her assets. Wearing an asymmetrical Atelier Versace gown in vivid blue, Chastain was prime example of how to dress for one’s complexion and hair-color. Plus, the gentle draping at the waist, matching Roger Vivier heels and soft Old Hollywood waves added just the right touch of refined elegance. Last but certainly not least, JLaw’s look was no-fuss but hit all the right notes for a film party. To celebrate The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I, the actress wore a layered ensemble just breezy enough for the occasion. Lawrence donned a Dior cobalt tank dress under a sheer, flowy gown. The wow factor? The contrasting emerald green Irene Neuwirth earrings that were an unconventional but smashing pick. Looking for more red carpet fashion highlights? Lupita Nyong’o, Alfre Woodard, and Oprah Toast African American Women In Film At the Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree in Beverly Hills

It was a night full of genuine sisterhood at the Alfre Woodard and Rémy Martin Annual Oscars Sistahs Soiree, where some of Hollywood’s leading ladies toasted African American women in film and honored stars Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave), Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Naomie Harris (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom), and Yolanda Ross (Go For Sisters) for their remarkable achievements in entertainment. ”I’m honored to be in that room with that group of women. I mean the guest list is shocking and to be honored in that room it means a lot,” Nyong’o tells InStyle. “I’ve been looking forward to this day, so I’m keen to go down there and be with them…so it’s a great night.”

The 29 guests—which included Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Rosario Dawson, and more— sat down around a table decorated with monochromatic red bloom centerpieces where they not only enjoyed a three-course meal of pepper-crusted seared Ahi tuna and vegan and gluten-free delicacies, but the women bonded over shared intimate conversations. “We put four [women] out as honoraries, but then have many toasts at the table. Everybody was able to stand up and say, you know what, I saw you in this this year and that was so great.  You recognize all the contributions,” Woodard explains to InStyle. “This is all the African-American women who’ve ever been nominated before in the acting category. It is for a specific reason and it was during Oscar week to get these women together first of all, so before they go out onto the carpet into the world [they] know that there are all these sisters who are pulling for them,”  she adds. “By gathering us together, that becomes our frame of reference for each other and we’re walking the same journey.” To go inside the intimate evening, look through our gallery to see what the stars had to say about their special sisterhood.

What Costumes Won Big for Film and Television This Year? Inside the Costume Designers Guild Awards

One of the reasons we love our favorite films and television shows is the costuming—and the top designers were honored at the 16th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards over the weekend. Held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California, stars like Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Olivia Munn, Mindy Kaling, and Kiernan Shipka came out to celebrate the event, which was hosted by Scandal‘s Joshua Malina. The Guild handed out competitive awards for costume design excellence in seven categories for film, television, and commercial work, with the costumers behind Blue Jasmine, 12 Years a Slave, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, House of Cards, Downton Abbey, and Behind the Candelabra all taking home top honors.

This year, five-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams was honored with the Lacoste Spotlight Award, which honors an actor whose talent and career personifies an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design. ”I just had such an amazing privilege working with so many extraordinary costume designers and so many wonderful costume departments, and I’ve learned so much,” Adams says. ”[Costume designers] have taught me that clothing is a language, but that costume is an art… I am so, so lucky to work with amazing artists.”

Additionally, writer, producer, and director Judd Apatow was recognized with the Distinguished Collaborator Award for his support of costume design and creative partnerships with costume designers. “I feel like this is really more for all the costume designers that I’ve worked with over the years,” Apatow tells InStyle. “They really work with us to create these characters.” Congratulations to all the night’s big winners!

Say Cheese! Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep Are All Smiles at the Premiere of Their Film, August: Osage County in L.A.

Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep were all smiles at the L.A. premiere of their new film, August: Osage County and they sure had reason to. Not only are the two leading ladies nominated for a Golden Globe (Streep for Best Actress and Roberts for Best Supporting Actress), but they also received both SAG and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nods, including Best Ensemble nominations for the film’s cast featuring a roster of Hollywood’s biggest names—including Ewan McGregor, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Julianne Nicholson, and more.

Back in September, InStyle caught up with Nicholson during the Toronto International Film Festival, where she spoke candidly about working with the big cast. “Everybody is so lovely and funny and it was that way immediately,” she said. “It probably started with Julia and her openness and excitement about doing the movie.” The cast brings Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play onto the big screen, which is based on a trio of sisters (Roberts, Lewis, and Nicholson), who reunite at their Oklahoma home with their dysfunctional mother (Streep) due to a family crisis, and what follows is a touching, comedic story about family. The film opens in theaters everywhere on December 25th.
