Happy Birthday, Britney Spears! See the Star’s Best Beauty Moments Through the Years

December 2, 2014 @ 7:14 am

Happy birthday, Britney Spears! The performer rings in her 33rd year today. It seems like just yesterday that the one-time brunette shot to stardom with her single “Baby One More Time” at the age of 16. Since then, the Princess of Pop has delivered chart-topping hits and best-selling fragrances, has launched a lingerie and sleepwear collection, and has even delved into acting with her leading role in 2002’s Crossroads, opposite Zoe Saldana and Taryn Manning, and her stint on How I Met Your Mother.

The Grammy winner currently headlines her own Vegas show (she’s had the residency for the past year) and plans to stick around through 2016. It’s been a whirlwind career for Spears—who as a working mom to sons Sean, 9, and Jayden, 8, makes it look seamless—and her recipe for success couldn’t be more straightforward. She tells InStyle, “Finding balance and happiness—and being healthy” are the keys to a fulfilled life.

Happy 45th Birthday, Gwen Stefani! From Punk Princess to Glamour Queen, See Her Best Beauty Moments

Happy birthday, Gwen Stefani! The positively ageless performer turns 45 today. Best known for being the frontwoman of No Doubt, Stefani has certainly come a long way since her combat boot-wearing and mesh top-rocking days (though we’re still big fans of her punk rock roots!) The Voice coach and L.A.M.B. designer can put a glamorous spin on any outfit, as we saw at this year’s VMAs and Emmys, and isn’t afraid to stand out—in fact, her signature edgy-chic look is her trademark. “I’m the girl who would wear baggy jeans but didn’t forget to put on tons of makeup,” Stefani has said of her early days with No Doubt. And we wouldn’t want it any other way!

Kristen Bell’s Secret Beauty Weapon for Surviving a Heat Wave

It’s hard to think about anything, let alone fashion or style, when you’re dripping with sweat in 90- or 100-degree heat. With the dog days of summer still ahead of us, we’ve taken precautionary measures and turned to the stars who not only know how to play it cool during stressful situations (read: red carpet events and interviews), but also when temps are alarmingly high. Kristen Bell, who is based in Los Angeles, knows all too well how unbearably hot it can get, and she keeps perspiration at bay with—wait for it—an all-natural deodorant.

“Wait, an all-natural deodorant that works?” we ask dubiously.

“Yes,” Bell insists. “I dare you to try it. I had been using men’s deodorant, but I wanted to eliminate aluminum. I’ve tried everything and decided to try it from this company on Etsy called Fat and the Moon, and I swear on my life, it works. I gave it to Dax [Shepard] and four of my friends, and everyone is obsessed. I ordered like a dozen of them because I have to give them out.”

The Fat and the Moon deodorant cream is handmade with all organic ingredients, including beeswax, coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oils. And yes, it’s aluminum free. We’re still a touch uncertain, but hey, if it has Bell’s endorsement, then that’s good enough for us.

Ask the Expert: The Beauty Maestro Troy Surratt

Behold Troy Surratt, the man who helped Jennifer Lopez find her “inner” glow (he bronzes her cheeks, eyes, and chin). Now with his own beauty line, the protégé of makeup legend Kevyn Aucoin dishes on crafting a foolproof face and looking 10 years younger (pain-free).

What are some of the coolest moments you’ve been privy to while working with the stars?

When I have a fashionwire.com/celebrity-fashion” target=”_self”>celebrity in my chair, it’s the only time in her hectic schedule she’s sitting still. Agents and personal assistants take advantage of that. I’ve seen movie deals signed and campaign offers negotiated.

Which products help makeup last all day?

Guerlain bronzer has saturated color that warms your complexion. Tom Ford lipstick is super-long-lasting—choose a cool blue-red if you have a fair complexion or a russet red if you have a warm complexion. Apply a single sweep of matte setting powder to keep everything in place. Finish with a mist of rosewater, then bounce a damp Beautyblender sponge over your entire face to lift excess powder—the rounded end tackles the cheeks and forehead, while the pointed tip gets the delicate areas surrounding your eyes and nose.

What’s an easy way to shave years off your look?

Appearing clear-eyed and well-rested is key. Applying Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Éclat right underneath your tear ducts has an instant brightening effect. Use Rohto eyedrops to keep your whites clear—they also have a cooling agent to make you feel awake.

Have you ever picked up a makeup tip from a client?

Anjelica Huston taught me how to prevent lipstick from getting on your teeth: Wrap your lips around the tip of your finger, and pull your finger out to remove color off the wet line of the mouth.

Where’s the craziest place you’ve ever done makeup?

Everywhere from fast-moving boats to trailers in the woods. But the wildest experiences have been in the private salons of celebrities’ homes. These custom makeup areas are equipped with everything you can imagine, like mini fridges for chilling fine perfumes and face creams. Glimpses into that world make up for the trailers in the woods.

Schedule VIP Treatments with New On-Demand Beauty Service Apps and Sites

May 8, 2014 @ 1:55 pm

In a perfect world, we’d all have copious amounts of time to get our hair professionally coiffed, our nails meticulously polished, our eyebrows (and other hair that we won’t mention) plucked and waxed—the list is endless.

Booking and going to those beauty maintenance appointments used to be a hassle but a slew of new beauty service apps and sites have made things much more convenient. With the click of a button (or a swipe!), you can book any number of desired services and then just wait for your professional to ring your doorbell! Here are our faves:

Stylebee

Founder Anna Santeramo started the app to help busy women book services at times that would work with anyone’s schedule, including last-minute appointments. With Stylebee, you can schedule an appointment at your home or office in as little as 2 hours. The app then matches you up with a Stylebee professionals nearby, who then bring their own tools to do the job at your requested location for a fee. The services currently offered are: blowout ($ 50), updo ($ 85), makeup ($ 85), and massage ($ 150) in San Francisco or Los Angeles, with New York launching soon. It’s available for download on iPhone or Android.

TheStylisted

Best friends and co-founders Lauren Katzberg and Julia Carmona bonded over a shared conundrum while getting their M.B.A.s at the University of Chicago—as women of a certain age, the number of weddings each had to attend piled up and they often needed to get their hair and makeup done prior to the weddings. They found booking a talented stylist to be a challenge and were unwilling to endure one more makeup counter experience gone wrong. Thus, Katzberg and Carmona built TheStylisted.com—an online platform that allows you to book in-home hair styling and makeup application from a network of vetted beauty professionals. It’s currently available in New York and Chicago and will be available in Los Angeles in October. Prices vary depending on stylist and service.

Byoutik

For those of you fashion fiends who want to recreate fashion’s hottest makeup or hair trends, what’s a better place to turn to than Paris? Get excited: The city’s hottest beauty booking app, Byoutik, is finally launching in the U.S.! They’re coming to the New York area this fall, and have plans to expand into other cities. The app aims to help users experience star treatment with personal pampering sessions. You can book anything from manicures, haircuts, waxing, makeup application, and massages (or all of the above!). Appointments can be done with trends like statement hair (think braids or the wet look), nail art (like 3D accents), and crazy makeup (try bedazzled eyes).

For even more beauty house-call apps pick up the June issue of InStyle, available on newsstands and for digital download May 16.
