Hopscotch, Power Wheels, and Purse-Shaped Cakes: Stella McCartney’s Fun Fall 2014 Presentation

If there is one designer who knows how to put the fun in presenting a collection, it’s Stella McCartney. Last night, the designer hosted an intimate launch to showcase her fall 2014 collection at the Harold Pratt House & Peterson Hall in New York City, complete with hopscotch and miniature Escalade power wheels. Close friends—including Liv Tyler, Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, Susan Sarandon, Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Alec and Hilaria Baldwin—also stopped by to join the fun.

As guests indulged in small bites, cakes in the shapes of Stella’s signature handbags, Beluga Vodka cocktails, and flutes of Veuve Clicquot champagne, models sported pieces from Stella’s new line including houndstooth and polka dot-printed pieces, along with designs featuring English artist Gary Hume’s graphic drawings, and masculine-inspired footwear (all sustainable of course). As much as we love the new collection, we can’t help but wonder which of McCartney’s friends did a round of hopscotch. Emma Thompson’s Post-Awards Show Ritual Involves Gin and Furry Socks

Awards season is heading into high gear, and this year’s nominees are already feeling the pressure—literally. “I’ve got Band-Aids on every single toe!” Emma Thompson told InStyle.com yesterday at one of the season’s first big nights, the National Board of Review Awards Gala held at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. “This is a lovely evening because you’re not too nervous because you know you’ve won. It’s true!” said Thompson who was presented the award for best actress for her portrayal of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks from good friend Meryl Streep (whom she enthusiastically embraced on the red carpet).

The film, which chronicles Walt Disney’s tumultuous fight to obtain the rights to the magical story, was an eye opening experience for Thompson. “I learned an awful lot about him. I didn’t know he had the childhood that he had,” she told reporters. “He was brought up in a very tough world, and you can see why he might want to create an endlessly perfect environment and childhood.” However, she was quick to point out that many of his stories have a darker undertone, including her favorite of his film’s, Dumbo! “Any elephant on any area I would love. The big ears!”

With the buzz continuing to surround her portrayal in the heartwarming film, we’re sure she’ll be heading to many more awards shows (including this Sunday’s Golden Globes for which she’s nominated for Best Actress). Her post-show ritual? “It’s really nice to go back and put on your dressing gown and a big pair of furry socks and have a large gin.” Sounds like a great idea to us!

With the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards is just days away (airing live on January 12th!), Hollywood kicked off award season early with the 25th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Gala this past weekend, which honored a few of the Golden Globe nominees themselves in Palm Springs, California.

Among the stars, Lupita Nyong’o was awarded the Breakthrough Performance Award for her role in 12 Years a Slave (and wore a stunning belted Elie Saab sheath dress with metallic embroidery), while Sandra Bullock (in a pink-and-orange two-toned Alex Perry dress) and Matthew McConaughey were both honored with the Desert Palm Achievement Awards, along with Meryl Streep (Icon Award), Tom Hanks (Chairman’s Award), Julia Roberts (Spotlight Award), and more.

With more than 2,100 guests in attendance, actors Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Naomie Harris, and Idris Elba all came out (in their stylish attires no less) to support their films and fellow co-stars. To see more photos from the gala, look through our gallery!

Chanel’s Métiers D’Art Paris-Dallas Show Came with a Surprise: Kristen Stewart Was Named the Campaign’s New Face

Texas was filled with fashion last night as Chanel staged its latest Métiers D’Art Paris-Dallas show in the state at Dallas Fair Park. Attendees who turned up to celebrate with the brand included Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning, Lily Collins, Zoë Kravitz, Lauren Hutton, and Alexa Chung.

Guests were welcomed with Fritos pie, spiked cherry lime-aid cocktails, ice cream and popcorn stands, along with rows of vintage American convertibles parked for a Chanel drive-in movie. The evening started with a short film, The Return, which details the story of Coco Chanel’s 1954 comeback. It was written and directed by Chanel’s head designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld, and stars Geraldine Chaplin as Coco Chanel. Some of the guests, including Stewart and Fanning, were seated in the classic cars to watch the entertainment, drive-in movie style. Next, Lagerfeld presented Chanel’s 2014 pre-fall collection on a hay-scattered runway in a venue so perfectly designed for the Western theme, it seemed straight out of the old Wild West. The runway looks were Americana-inspired, and featured tweed, fringe, feathers, pearls, and unsurprisingly, lots of denim.

In addition to the festivities, the brand also announced that Kristen Stewart would front its campaign for the pre-fall range. The ads will be shot by Karl Lagerfeld himself and are slated for a May 2014 release—and we can’t wait to see them!

Say Cheese! Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep Are All Smiles at the Premiere of Their Film, August: Osage County in L.A.

Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep were all smiles at the L.A. premiere of their new film, August: Osage County and they sure had reason to. Not only are the two leading ladies nominated for a Golden Globe (Streep for Best Actress and Roberts for Best Supporting Actress), but they also received both SAG and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nods, including Best Ensemble nominations for the film’s cast featuring a roster of Hollywood’s biggest names—including Ewan McGregor, Dermot Mulroney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Juliette Lewis, Julianne Nicholson, and more.

Back in September, InStyle caught up with Nicholson during the Toronto International Film Festival, where she spoke candidly about working with the big cast. “Everybody is so lovely and funny and it was that way immediately,” she said. “It probably started with Julia and her openness and excitement about doing the movie.” The cast brings Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play onto the big screen, which is based on a trio of sisters (Roberts, Lewis, and Nicholson), who reunite at their Oklahoma home with their dysfunctional mother (Streep) due to a family crisis, and what follows is a touching, comedic story about family. The film opens in theaters everywhere on December 25th.

Meow! Miranda Kerr, Heather Graham, and More Celebrate Animal Print at the Opening of Roberto Cavalli’s New Boutique

The Just Cavalli store was awash with loud prints and a very fashionable crowd last night at the flagship boutique opening in New York City. Guests including Heather Graham and Miranda Kerr sipped on cocktails made with Roberto Cavalli Vodka while DJ Mad Marj spun tunes by M.I.A. and Katy Perry.

Designer Roberto Cavalli arrived with Kerr on his arm, and everyone flocked to congratulate him on the boutique’s grand opening. “Just Cavalli is so sexy, so young looking. I’m excited to see the young, bright American girls wearing Just Cavalli. They will understand it,” Cavalli told InStyle.com exclusively.

“He just has a great spirit about him,” Kerr, dressed in a floor-length animal-print Just Cavalli gown, told us. “His clothes fit and are wearable, but still sexy.” After exploring the store (which features one wall covered in floor-to-ceiling fringe and a suspended flight of stairs covered in transparent python print), guests took in the pre-fall runway show that followed next, where models emerged from the lower level, making a loop around the store and then outside onto the street for passers-by to see.

The collection was signature Cavalli, featuring richly colored leather and striking patterns, including animal print. “It is the usual for me. It is my beginning,” the designer said of why he often uses the vibrant pattern. “I take my animal print from the real photo of the animal that I shoot. That is the secret to my animal print!”
