November 10, 2014 @ 7:16 am

Country music superstar Miranda Lambert turns 31 today! We were first introduced to the Texas-born beauty in the 2003 music competition, Nashville Star, where she came in third place. It did not take long before Lambert released her first album, Kerosene, which debuted at the top of the country music chart. Among her other accolades: the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” songstress picked up four more awards on Wednesday’s CMAs (which gives the birthday girl a total of 11 CMA trophies). The Grammy winner continues her reign alongside her better half, Blake Shelton, as country music’s King and Queen.

Happy birthday, Matthew McConaughey! The actor turns 45 today. While his acting career took off from starring in addictive romantic comedies opposite Kate Hudson and Jennifer Lopez, McConaughey has since foregone putting his chiseled abs on full display, and has instead opted for roles of the more dramatic variety.

Fine Tuned: Olivia Somerlyn On Her Ethereal Wardrobe in the “Parachute” Music Video

Olivia Somerlyn may have a wealth of videos posted to her YouTube channel (and over 6,000 subscribers to boot), but only one of them is an actual music video. And for her first time creating a piece of visual art, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter took to it with uncharted enthusiasm: Not only did she design and style her own wardrobe, but she directed the whole shoot and brought on former tour mate Nick Jonas as a producer. “I wanted the wardrobe to represent the meaning behind the song,” she told InStyle.

The meaning is obvious after hearing the first refrain (brought to life after the youngest Jonas hummed the melody during a recording session). “It’s about attachment—when you’re being pulled into something and have no control,” Somerlyn said. And her wardrobe was meant to explicitly echo just that. “I wanted to wear something billowy and all-consuming,” she added. “It symbolizes how I’m completely trapped by this external force.” To create the ethereal number, the Cali native sketched how the front and sides would look using an actual parachute for design inspiration. For added flare, she adorned her nightgown-esque sheath with rose gold jewelry by Sara Weinstock.

At the end of the video, Somerlyn ultimately lets go off of her metaphorical cloth canopy (but not before being ushered above the Mojave Desert in a harness powered by an extremely large rig–the same one used by Katy Perry in her music video for “Roar”), which was yet another first for the singer. Given the profound legwork, we expect this one will be her most-clicked-on post to date.
